Summary
This book consists of two parts. The first part details the author's mysterious journey in 1938. He was awarded a government scholarship to study at the University of Hong Kong even though he wrote an essay on a battle in Chinese history which was not the one set out in the matriculation examination paper. After the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong, the author worked successively for the British Naval Intelligence and the Chinese Nationalist Army in China. After the second world war, he pursued further studies at Oxford University on a Victory Scholarship and later qualified as a barrister-at-law.
