50th Anniversary Academic Talk 1 – From Science to Impact
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Ho Fung College, we arrange a series of academic talks. We are honoured to invite Professor Lo Yuk Ming Dennis, the newly appointed President of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), to give a science talk on 10th December 2024.
Professor Lo is a molecular biologist, well known for his contribution to the development of non-invasive prenatal testing. His research focuses on the detection of cell-free fetal DNA in blood plasma. He is the current Associate Dean (Research) and Li Ka Shing Professor of Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine of the CUHK.
In the talk, Professor Lo shared with our S4 to S6 students his journey from a medical student to a scientist and then a biotechnology entrepreneur. Professor Lo described his core research in prenatal diagnosis and cancer screening. He can translate basic scientific discoveries into medical technologies that are impacting healthcare on a global scale.
In addition, Professor Lo shared his experience with patent litigation on scientific research and he emphasised its importance, which made students aware of the necessity of protecting innovative achievements.
Finally, Professor Lo mentioned the extended application of DNA sequencing technology and discussed its application in early cancer screening and all these stimulated students' enthusiasm and interest in future scientific research.
